5 Hobbies To Learn At Home

Published
01/8/2021

As we are getting more and more familiar with days spent at home, we become increasingly aware of how little there is to do. You can only watch so many TV shows and movies before you start milling around.  Maybe it's time to pick up a new hobby, or continue an old one.  Hobbies are great for enhancing your life, and allowing you to destress while staying productive. We've outlined 5 awesome hobbies you can learn to stay productive while passing the time at home.

Learn a language

One of the most practical hobbies you could take up, is learning a new language. Many people don't want to take the time to learn a new language, but the benefits of this are astronomical. Even if you can't travel to the places that natively speak the language you're learning, you can learn now in order to prepare for when you do.

There are feasible ways get started with a new language as well. Many online resources are free and can range from beginner classes to conversational, advanced classes. If you have the time and resources, you could use other language learning assets such as Rosetta Stone, Duolingo, or Udemy. While learning a new language, you are also becoming accustomed with their culture through music, TV shows, and movies.

Build A Puzzle

Puzzles are a fun, simple pastime that are a great hobby to do alone, or with friends and family. In fact, people who puzzle together experience better collaboration and cooperation skills which leads to better relationships. Not only is building a puzzle enjoyable, it also has science-backed health benefits. These benefits could be an improvement in cognitive ability, problem solving skills, and visual-spatial reasoning. Looking at the individual pieces and figuring out where they fit in the bigger picture, reinforces these benefits which will help with driving, packing, and reading maps.

Setting aside time every day to "unplug" from digital life and focusing on a puzzle can also improve your short term memory and lengthen your life. Building a puzzle reinforces links between your brain cells, improves your mental speed, and gives you a smaller chance of developing Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

Cook or Bake

Cooking is by far the most delicious hobby you can undertake. Because you have a lot of extra time, you can look into cooking new dishes you've had your eye on or you can cook meals that are representative of another country. You could begin with some basic recipes and then add something of your own by tweaking the sauces or spices. If you really don't know where to start, there are tons of online tutorials/demos you can watch.

Because we all have to cook dinner anyway, you might as well make it exciting. If you cook all the same meals everyday, then cooking will seem less like a hobby and more like a chore. If you don't want to come up with the recipes on your own, check out our blog post that features 3 recipes you can make with ingredients you already have.

Craft

If you find your creative side needs stimulating, you could start crafting. This could be DIY projects, knitting, scrapbooking, painting, drawing, candle making, literally anything that you can imagine. These crafts are not meant to just look nice, they have practical benefits as well. DIY's and candle making are crafts in which you can see definite progress and there is a clear end. Once you reach this end, you feel a sense of accomplishment and pride which can help improve your self esteem.

Coloring, knitting, and painting are also great ways to calm your mind and relieve stress. They are mindful activities that encourage you to breath, focus your attention, and decompress.

Take Up Journaling

Journaling is a great hobby to have. It doesn't require random, obscure materials like crafting might. Journaling can be done anytime you have a pen and paper. Journaling doesn't have to be an organized, daily diary or list, it can be your thoughts or feelings about certain situations. In fact, just by spewing your thoughts and feelings, it can help improve how you express yourself through words to others.

You don't have to stick to journaling either. You can pick up some creative writing such as poems, fiction, and short stories. This could active your creative side and help you relax and get lost in your imagination. Maybe you'll write the next big book or a historically significant journal that people will read for years to come.

These five hobbies are only a few of the vast options you can pick up to pass your time. Working your mental muscles and relaxing is a beneficial thing to do with all your extra time at home. For more hobby ideas, check out this website.
