How Does Valet Parking At Hotels Work? - Hotel Valet Parking

Many hotels, especially large and high-end hotels, offer valet parking for guests. If you're not sure what valet parking means, here's the gist — you arrive at the hotel, collect your belongings and give your keys to the valet, who then parks your car for you. When you need to pick up your vehicle, you must go through the valet service to do so.

Here are seven tips to help you navigate the valet parking service at a hotel.

1. Get Everything You Need

When you arrive at the hotel, make sure you don't forget anything important in the car! Take everything with you, such as your cell phone, chargers, wallet, and luggage. If you realize you forgot something, you may need to wait a little while until you can get to it. Valets can become very busy retrieving guests cars, and they operate in the order of the request. So, if there are 10 people in front of you waiting for their cars, you could have a long wait time.

2. Don't Linger in the Drop-Off Zone

In some big cities, like New York City, there will be limited space. Staying too long may cause traffic back-ups and the valets to get frustrated. You need to move as quickly as possible and be cognizant of your surroundings.

3. Mind Your Valuables

Because valets may be parking your car at the hotel's garage or another type of lot that is more secluded, you should hide any valuables you aren't taking with you. If you keep phone cables, a GPS, cash or other electronics and expensive items in your car, move them so they're out of sight. Store them in the glove compartment, under the seat or in other spots so people outside the vehicle can't see them as this is an invitation for a break in.

4. Tell Your Valet About Any Quirks

Driving any car for the first time can be a challenge. If your car has a unique quirk, be sure to tell your valet about it. If the window can get stuck, the brakes aren't as sensitive as they used to be or it has another quality that affects its driving, the valet will want to know about it. Telling them in advance helps to ensure the attendants will drive your vehicle as safely as possible.

5. Keep Your Claim Ticket

When you drop off your car with a valet, they will give you a ticket, like a receipt. This is necessary for when you want to pick up the car. It tells the valet which car is yours and where on the property it is parked. Don't lose your claim ticket!

6. Plan Ahead

Using valet parking can affect your travel during your stay. If you need to be somewhere at a particular time, be sure to factor in the time it may take for your car to arrive. If other people are waiting to pick up their cars, too, you may have to wait. When you use valet parking, you can't just walk out to the parking lot and drive away whenever you want.

7. Always Tip Your Valet

Just like you should tip hotel staff, you should always tip your valet when you drop off and pick up your car. Typically, $2 to $5 is an acceptable tip for a valet, depending on the type of hotel you're staying at.
